Why Add Kimchi to Your Grilled Cheese?

Kimchi is rich in probiotics, which are essential for a balanced intestinal microbiota. Combined with the softness and creaminess of the melted cheese, it creates a delicious contrast and an explosion of flavours.

Kimchi transforms your ordinary grilled cheese into a gourmet recipe that combines crispy, melty, and tangy properties while remaining a healthy and easy-to-make option.

Equipment

  • 1 Chopping board
  • 1 Knife
  • 1 mandoline slicer or peeler
  • 1 Non-stick frying pan
  • 1 Spatula

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread, not too thick (ideally sourdough bread)
  • Cheese of your choice (Tomme, cheddar, Comté, Gruyère...)
  • 3 tbsp. kimchi (drained and coarsely chopped if required)
  • Butter or oil for cooking

Steps

  • Slice the cheese thinly with a mandoline or peeler to ensure it melts perfectly.
  • Lay the cheese slices on a slice of bread.
  • Add the kimchi on top.
  • Add more cheese and close with the second slice of bread.
  • Heat a drizzle of oil over medium heat or a knob of butter until foamy.
  • Place the grilled cheese on top and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, pressing lightly to ensure even cooking.
  • Once golden brown and crispy, serve immediately!

Notes

If, after pan-frying, the cheese isn't melted enough for your taste, you can finish cooking in a preheated oven at 180°C (355°F).
For even more indulgence, you can top your grilled kimcheese sandwich with a red onion confit with maple syrup and balsamic vinegar - the perfect match!
For a gluten-free alternative, feel free to substitute the sourdough bread with a gluten-free loaf of your own making.
